What is LEGO Serious Play? An Introduction to the Methodology
Reimagining the classic linear process steps using Build Cycles
LEGO® Serious Play® makes thinking visible. It is an enhanced communication tool that helps teams to build tangible representations of what is in their heads, in front of them. This allows others to see their thinking and interact with these ideas in real time.
The LEGO® Serious Play® Method was conceived for the boardroom - but it has spectacularly outgrown these initial constraints in terms of potential applications. Leaders, Educators, Coaches, Strategic Thinkers, Facilitators, Counsellors and so many more have been trained by us. All of these people had one thing in common: they understood how this versatile method could add value to their context and setting.
In a world that is being increasingly driven by inhuman factors - profit, productivity, technology - LEGO® Serious Play® offers a human-centred counterpoint. Leveraging the principles of purposeful play, the method is an outstanding tool for fostering collaboration, networked creativity and the ability to map and navigate complexity through making systems thinking visible.
Your questions about the LEGO® Serious Play® methodology, answered. If you’d like to know more, we’re always happy to talk.
LEGO® Serious Play® is an enhanced communication method where participants use LEGO® bricks to build models that represent their ideas, insights and stories. It encourages creative thinking, open communication and effective problem-solving.
You’ll be able to design and facilitate any kind of meeting (with or without LEGO® bricks) to a higher standard, that achieves outcomes. You will know when LEGO® Serious Play® is the right method to use, and leave class with the confidence to immediately apply what you have learnt.
Yes. While some traditionalists advise against blending the method with other tools, we respectfully disagree. We encourage you to combine LEGO® Serious Play® with other tools and methods you already know, love and trust.
The main differences relate to the reliance on technology. Using videoconferencing tools like Zoom and digital whiteboards like Miro and MURAL introduce different challenges — all of which are covered in training.
Our 2-day Foundation Training enables you to facilitate Build Level 1: Individual Models and Build Level 2: Shared Models. To facilitate System Level Models you will need to take our 4-day Advanced System Level Class.

The LEGO® Serious Play® methodology can be applied across a wide range of organisational, educational and coaching contexts. Its flexibility allows facilitators to explore complex challenges, encourage participation, and create deeper conversations that lead to meaningful action.
Whether used in workshops, leadership development, team building, or coaching, the methodology helps people think differently, communicate more openly, and develop shared understanding.
Visioning – LEGO Serious Play is frequently used to help organisations create a shared vision for the future. By building models that represent aspirations, goals and opportunities, participants can explore what success looks like and identify the steps needed to achieve it. This approach helps create stronger alignment and ownership than traditional vision-setting exercises.
Identity and Purpose – Organisations, departments and individuals can use LEGO Serious Play to explore who they are, what they stand for, and why they exist. Through building and storytelling, participants uncover the values, beliefs and motivations that shape their identity, helping to create a stronger sense of purpose and direction.
Current Reality – Before planning for the future, organisations often need a clear understanding of their current situation. LEGO Serious Play helps participants visualise existing challenges, opportunities, relationships and constraints. By making complex realities visible, teams can develop a more accurate and shared understanding of where they are today.
Futures Thinking and Scenario Planning – In uncertain environments, organisations need to prepare for multiple possible futures. LEGO Serious Play provides a powerful framework for futures thinking and scenario planning, allowing participants to explore potential opportunities, risks and emerging trends. This helps teams build resilience, adaptability and strategic awareness when planning for the future.
Strategic Thinking -Leaders are often required to navigate ambiguity and make decisions in complex environments. LEGO Serious Play helps leaders explore strategic challenges from multiple perspectives, identify connections between issues, and develop a clearer understanding of the factors influencing organisational success.
Leadership Development – Leadership development programmes increasingly use LEGO Serious Play to encourage reflection, self-awareness and growth. By building models that represent leadership styles, challenges and aspirations, participants gain deeper insight into how they lead and how they can become more effective in supporting others.
Mapping and Navigating Complexity – Many organisational challenges involve interconnected systems rather than simple problems. LEGO Serious Play enables leaders to map relationships, dependencies and influences within complex environments, helping them identify leverage points and develop more informed responses to change and uncertainty.
Employee Engagement and Participation – Creating opportunities for employees to contribute their ideas is essential for organisational success. LEGO Serious Play encourages participation by giving everyone an equal voice in the conversation. This helps leaders gather diverse perspectives, strengthen engagement, and build a culture where people feel heard and valued.
Team Dynamics – LEGO Serious Play is highly effective for exploring team dynamics and strengthening working relationships. It can be particularly valuable when used alongside psychometric profiling tools, helping teams understand different working styles, communication preferences and strengths. This creates greater awareness, trust and collaboration across the group.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion – The methodology creates an inclusive environment where everyone contributes equally, regardless of role, seniority or personality type. By encouraging participants to share experiences and perspectives through models, LEGO Serious Play can support meaningful conversations around diversity, equity and inclusion while helping teams develop greater empathy and understanding.
Onboarding and Team Integration – When new people join an organisation or team, LEGO Serious Play can accelerate integration and relationship building. New starters can explore team culture, values, expectations and ways of working in an engaging and collaborative way, helping them feel connected and productive more quickly.
Collaboration and Collective Problem Solving – Teams use LEGO Serious Play to tackle challenges that require multiple perspectives and creative thinking. By making ideas visible and encouraging structured dialogue, the methodology supports collaborative problem solving, innovation and the development of solutions that are informed by the collective intelligence of the group.
Professional Learning and Development – Coaches use LEGO Serious Play to support professional growth and continuous learning. The methodology helps individuals explore goals, challenges and opportunities in a structured yet creative way, leading to deeper reflection and greater self-awareness.
Instructional, Facilitative and Dialogic Coaching – LEGO Serious Play can enhance a range of coaching approaches by providing a visual and hands-on way for individuals to explore their thinking. Coaches can use the methodology to facilitate richer conversations, uncover assumptions, and support clients in generating their own insights and solutions.
Facilitating Challenging Conversations – Some conversations are difficult because they involve uncertainty, conflict or sensitive issues. LEGO Serious Play provides a neutral and constructive framework for exploring these topics. By focusing attention on the models rather than the individuals, conversations often become more open, reflective and productive.
Enhanced Communication – Many coaching conversations focus on helping people communicate more effectively. LEGO Serious Play enables individuals to express ideas that may be difficult to articulate through words alone. This can lead to greater clarity, stronger understanding, and more meaningful dialogue between coaches, leaders and teams.
