1. The Spiral of Iterative Learning

This cyclical framework increases the capacity for learning to be meaningful by allowing learners to continually review and challenge their own understanding. By revisiting models and questions throughout a unit of study, participants engage in the construction and reconstruction of new understandings and knowledge atop of prior knowledge. 2. Making Systems Thinking Visible

When L&D teams tackle highly complex, interconnected challenges—like organizational design or supply chain disruptions—the method scales into Build Level 3: Systems Models. Systemic challenges are notoriously difficult to conceptualize because they exist primarily in the abstract. LSP brings these abstractions into the physical world, inviting groups to make systems thinking visible.

Participants place their individual and shared models onto a central table to represent a physical “landscape”. This bird’s-eye view shifts learners out of their siloed perspectives, forcing them to look at the holistic ecosystem of the problem rather than just their isolated piece of it.

3. Identifying “Agents” of Change

A core component of mapping complexity in LSP is identifying the factors that might influence the system. In LSP terminology, these are called “agents,” and an agent can be absolutely anything that has the potential to influence a system.

In some strategic workshops, facilitators use “Persona Cards” to introduce empathetic agents into the build. A persona is a fictional individual representative of a specific group of people. By treating a user, student, or customer persona as a different ‘agent’ that can influence the shared model, teams are challenged to evaluate how their system holds up against the specific needs and pressures of that demographic.

4. Mapping the Nature of Connections

Understanding that two things are connected is helpful; understanding how they are connected is vital. In a systems build, connections matter. It is not just about which ideas are linked, but the fundamental nature of that link.

Learners use physical connectors, like strings, tubes, or long bricks, to represent the relationships, dependencies, and flow of information between the models. L&D facilitators challenge participants to consider whether the connection is strong or weak, and if it is a one-way or reciprocating relationship. By explicitly defining and building these physical connections, teams can uncover hidden dependencies that a standard 2D flowchart would simply gloss over.

5. Animating the System to Reveal Unintended Consequences

This is the watershed moment in any LSP systems workshop. Once the landscape is built and the connections are secured, the system is dynamically interacted with. Facilitators challenge participants to “animate” the model by physically manipulating or shaking a specific agent.

As the agent is moved, participants observe the tension on the physical connectors. If an agent has a “strong” connection to the central model, animating it can have a significant physical impact, potentially even causing parts of the model to break. It is completely OK if this happens. Breaking the model visually communicates how different elements within the system are connected and how a localized change can have a profound, cascading influence on another. It allows teams to witness the unintended consequences of their strategies in a safe, physical simulation before implementing changes in the real world.
